Winter Clothing & Essentials List

Proper preparation is the key to fully enjoying the "Penguin Walk" and playing in the snow at Asahiyama Zoo!
To help you handle the freezing sub-zero temperatures, we have selected essential winter items that make a world of difference.

We cover everything from the basics of layering to specific tips for children’s snow gear and choosing the right footwear to protect your feet from the biting cold.
Check out these practical tips now to ensure a comfortable and worry-free visit!

The most important Part! Preventing cold feet and Slips

Keeping your feet warm is the most important part of enjoying Asahiyama Zoo in winter!
To avoid injuries from slips and falls, please make sure your footwear provides "Warmth," "Waterproofing," and "Superior Grip" at all times.

● Winter Snow boots
Select boots with deep treads for "Waterproofing" and "Anti-slip" performance.
If your boots aren't waterproof, melted snow will soak through, causing your feet to freeze and potentially leading to frostbite.
To ensure you can focus on the animals instead of your cold toes, be sure to wear high-quality waterproof winter shoes.
Asahiyama Zoo has many slopes, so preventing slips is a must.
If you aren't used to walking on snow, we highly recommend using attachable ice cleats or spikes that can be easily fitted over your shoes!

● Thick socks Wool
Wool socks are highly recommended for their excellent heat retention.
Wool is a traveler’s best friend because it retains warmth even if it gets slightly damp.
However, the most important thing is to keep your socks dry; once they are soaked, your feet will lose heat rapidly.
We recommend bringing a spare pair of socks just in case you need a quick change.
While layering socks is an option for extra warmth, be careful not to make your boots too tight, as this can restrict blood flow.
Make sure to adjust your layers to fit comfortably inside your winter boots.

Choose insulated gloves

Gloves are more than just a winter accessory because they are an essential item to trap heat and stay warm.
You should choose a pair that provides good insulation while also being easy to put on and take off for tasks like operating a camera.

● Winter gloves
Choose fully waterproof gloves to keep your hands dry and warm when touching snow.
There are many types of gloves, but it is best to choose those designed for snow activities if you plan to touch the snow.
While knit gloves are stylish and come in many designs, snow tends to stick to them and they can get soaked easily.
We also recommend using thin inner gloves made of wool or silk.
By layering your gloves, you can keep your hands covered even when you take off your outer layer, which prevents your fingers from freezing instantly.

Mastering the Art of Layering and Wind Protection

The Key to Staying Warm with Functional Layers.

Base Layer (Innerwear)
Choose high-performance materials to keep your body heat from escaping.

Select materials with excellent heat retention and moisture-absorbing properties, such as merino wool or advanced synthetic fibers.
Even when protected by windproof and waterproof outerwear, you might still sweat.
A functional base layer makes a huge difference because it prevents sweat from cooling down your body while keeping you warm.

● Middle Layer
Maintain your temperature with a layer of air.
Fleece is a good option, but we highly recommend items like light down jackets that can create a thick layer of trapped air.
Since you will need to adjust your temperature frequently by adding or removing this layer, choose something thin that is easy to take off and pack away.

● Outerwear
The final defense against wind and snow.

In sub-zero temperatures, the wind can drop your perceived temperature instantly.
It is essential to wear windproof and waterproof materials that can completely block the freezing air.
Please choose a high-performance jacket equivalent to professional ski wear.

● Neck Warmer
Fully block cold air by covering your neck.
Covering your neck is important to protect your arteries from the cold, but it also serves another purpose.
It prevents cold air from entering your outerwear and stops your body heat from escaping. Make sure to choose a neck warmer that fits snugly around your neck for maximum protection.

Essential Winter Gear for Kids : Focus on "Staying Dry"

Children move around more than adults and spend more time playing in the snow.
For kids, keeping them dry is the most important part of staying warm.

● Waterproof Ski Wear (Two-Piece Style)
Full waterproof and windproof protection is a must-have.

Choose waterproof gear instead of water-resistant fabrics because children often get covered in snow.
A two-piece set is also better for quick bathroom breaks and temperature adjustment.

● Long Mitten-Style Gloves
Choose long, waterproof mittens that completely cover the wrists.

Gloves with long cuffs that cover the sleeves will thoroughly prevent snow from getting inside.
Mittens are much better than five-finger gloves because they provide higher insulation.
They are the perfect choice for children who tend to get cold fingertips while playing in the snow.

● Neck warmer
Pull-over neck warmers are highly recommended.

Scarves are risky because they can come untied and also allow cold wind to enter through gaps.
A pull-over neck warmer is much better because it provides a secure fit and solid protection around the neck.

Bags for Wet Items
Bringing a few bags is very convenient.

It is helpful to have extra bags for storing wet gloves or socks so they do not get your other belongings wet inside your backpack.
Bringing several bags with you will help keep the rest of your luggage dry and clean.

Warm up your body! Asahikawa's gourmet

Asahikawa Ramen

Asahikawa ramen is world-renowned for its signature "double soup," which is a rich blend of pork, chicken, and seafood broths.
To keep the soup piping hot even in the freezing zoo environment, it is topped with a thin layer of lard that seals in the heat.
When the hot soup clings to the noodles, it warms your entire body from the inside out and helps you recharge for more animal encounters.

Fresh Genghis Khan & Pork Sagari

There’s nothing quite like gathering around a grill for fresh, tender, and odorless raw lamb Genghis Khan, or the locally beloved "Pork Sagari" (pork diaphragm).
The warm, lively atmosphere of these restaurants is truly exceptional.
Enjoying a hot meal with family and friends will make you forget all about the winter chill.
It’s the perfect way to end your day with a smile!

Local sake and Craft beer

Asahikawa’s brewing tradition is deeply rooted in the pure underground water from the Daisetsuzan.
You will be captivated by the crisp finish of our local sake and the rich flavors of our craft beer.
We highly recommend sipping these local drinks slowly, perhaps paired with warm appetizers, as you relax after your snowy adventure.
It is the ultimate way to savor the magical atmosphere of winter in Asahikawa.
