Asahiyama Zoo
Experience the animals up close
The true magic of Asahiyama Zoo lies in its unique "behavioral exhibitions," a design philosophy that highlights the natural instincts and dynamic behaviors of its residents. Every enclosure is thoughtfully crafted for the animals' ultimate comfort, offering visitors a breathtaking, up-close look at them in their natural element.
At the Penguin House, watch penguins "fly" through an underwater tunnel, and step into the Seal House to see seals effortlessly gliding up and down a massive cylindrical tank. You’ll be blown away by the incredible power of polar bears splashing into their pool at the Polar Bear House, and captivated by orangutans swinging gracefully from a 17-meter-high tower at the Orangutan House. Don't miss the Hippo House, where you can gaze up from below as hippos gracefully swim overhead. To see wildlife unique to the region, visit the Crane House, Sika Deer Forest, and the Hokkaido Animal Facility. Also, be sure to check out the Hokkaido Brown Bear House (opened in 2022), where an indoor habitat inspired by the wild Shiretoko peninsula brings you face-to-face with Hokkaido’s iconic brown bears.
Unmissable Highlights: "Mogu-mogu Time" and Seasonal Events
A definite must-see is "Mogu-mogu (Feeding) Time," a fantastic opportunity to observe the animals’ natural feeding habits. The schedule is set fresh every morning, so check the zoo's bulletin boards or official website to plan your route for the day.
Asahiyama Zoo also offers spectacular seasonal experiences. The "Night Zoo," held during the summer Obon holiday, is a beloved local tradition where you can witness the lively activities of nocturnal creatures and perhaps even hear the haunting howl of wolves. Come winter, when the snow blankets the ground, the famous "Penguin Walk" begins. Watching these adorable birds waddling freely along a snow-covered path is guaranteed to be an unforgettable highlight of your winter trip.
