Fukiage Onsen
A wild and rustic hot spring destination in the heart of nature
Located halfway up Mt. Tokachi, Fukiage Onsen is a rustic hot spring destination surrounded by magnificent nature. Here stands "Hakuginso," a solitary hot spring lodge offering both day-trip bathing and self-catering accommodations.
Situated right at the trailhead of Mt. Tokachi, it draws many outdoor enthusiasts for hiking in the summer and backcountry skiing in the winter. The facility boasts a fully-equipped large indoor bath—featuring a rock bath with the soothing scent of Hiba wood, a bubble bath, and a lay-down bath. However, the real star is the incredibly spacious open-air bath, where you can soak while bathing in the fresh forest air. In addition to the separate men's and women's baths, there is a large mixed-gender open-air bath complete with a slide, making it incredibly popular for families.
Just a 5-minute walk away lies "Fukiage Roten-no-Yu," a free, mixed-gender wild hot spring that became instantly famous after being featured in the classic Japanese TV drama Kita no Kuni kara (From the Northern Country). It remains a bustling and beloved spot for many bathers.
(Note: Swimsuits are required for the mixed-gender bath at Hakuginso.)
