Shirahige Waterfall
One of Biei’s representative waterfalls and a top sight in the Shirogane Onsen area
Groundwater seeping from the rock face plunges about 30 metres to the river below, sending up sprays into the Biei River — commonly called the “Blue River.” The waterfall’s powerful flow, which can resemble a white beard, is how it got its name. Its changing expressions through the four seasons are not to be missed.
In winter the contrast of the falling water against the white snow and bare rock becomes even more striking. When the lit trees are frosted with rime, the scene takes on an especially magical, otherworldly quality.
