Shirogane Blue Pond
Mesmerized by the Magical Blue!
Shirogane Blue Pond spreads a scene so otherworldly it feels like stepping into another world.
The pond is an artificial lake formed when river water pooled behind a block weir built on the Biei River during construction work to prevent volcanic mudflows from Mt. Tokachi. Famous worldwide for its mysteriously vivid blue color, the pond is a top sightseeing destination.
The surrounding natural landscape and the standing dead larch trunks create a magical atmosphere, and the pond’s appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring the water takes on a soft, gentle blue; in summer it contrasts strikingly with fresh green foliage; in autumn it harmonizes with the fall colors; and in winter the frozen surface and snow‑clad surroundings transform the area into a silver, dreamlike world. From November through April the site is illuminated at night, producing an enchanting scene that seems to pull you in.
A stroll along the boardwalk encircling the pond — with its row of silver birches — makes for a delightfully leisurely experience.
