Situated at an elevation of 930 meters, just a 5-km drive from Biei's Shirokane Onsen, Bogakudai is a spectacular viewpoint offering close-up views of the dynamic active volcano, Mt. Tokachi. With its smoking peak and rugged rock faces unfolding right before your eyes, it is the perfect place to truly immerse yourself in Hokkaido's majestic outdoors.

The area features a 1.1-km walking trail (taking about 45 minutes), where visitors can enjoy delicate alpine flora in summer and blazing autumn colors in the fall. If you're lucky, you might even spot an Ezo pika—a small mammal endemic to Hokkaido affectionately known as the "mountain fairy."

Serving as a popular base camp for ascending Mt. Tokachi, the site offers four climbing routes suitable for all levels, from beginners to experts. The autumn foliage peaks between late September and early October, painting the mountain slopes in breathtaking shades of red and yellow.

Equipped with a rest house and free parking, it is an excellent stopover not only for hikers but also for those on a scenic drive. After thoroughly enjoying the breathtaking views and your stroll, unwind and soothe your fatigue in the 100% natural, free-flowing hot spring waters of Shirogane Onsen.
