Ōbako
A monumental cliff sculpted by nature: the majestic gorge along the Ishikari River
One of Sounkyo’s signature scenic spots, this gorge features columnar‑jointed cliffs rising up to 200 meters on both banks of the Ishikari River, their regular formations resembling a vast folding screen. The view from the observation deck is truly breathtaking. Especially stunning in spring’s fresh greenery and autumn’s foliage, it’s a spectacular spot that’s easy to stop by on a drive.
