Takushinkan is a gallery devoted mainly to the work of Shinzo Maeda, the photographer who put the Biei hills on the world map. Housed in a wooden building repurposed from a former elementary school, the gallery displays signature images that capture the hills through the seasons — lavender and wheat fields, snow‑covered plains, and the play of light and shadow. Standing before the prints, visitors can almost see the gentle curves, the textures of the fields, and the shifting colors of the sky, and feel the poetry and quiet of Biei’s landscape.

The gallery includes a shop selling photobooks and postcards, and its grounds feature gardens and walking paths that bloom with seasonal flowers, making it easy to combine viewing with a short outing. As a base for exploring the area, Takushinkan is ideal for hill tours and pairs well with nearby attractions such as the Panorama Road and the region’s famous lone‑tree viewpoints.
