Chishima-zasa Bamboo Craft Center
Amazing craftsmanship born from familiar plants. An exhibition of woven bamboo grass crafts
Chishima-zasa—affectionately known in Hokkaido as "Nemagaridake" (root-bending bamboo)—is a familiar local plant. This unique facility is dedicated to exhibiting and selling exquisite crafts woven from this very material.
Inside, you will find a gallery filled with delicate yet highly practical items, including bags, flower baskets, and everyday tools, all meticulously crafted by the "Kita-no-Take Kobo" (Northern Bamboo Workshop). Forged in the harsh, snowy environment, Chishima-zasa crafts are renowned for their beauty and remarkable durability, earning them a spot as official return gifts for Pippu Town’s hometown tax program.
Conveniently located just steps away from JR Pippu Station, this is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Hokkaido's rich natural heritage and traditional craftsmanship. (Please check their opening schedule, as the facility is closed during the winter.)
For a deeper connection, you can even join our hands-on programs, such as heading out to harvest the bamboo alongside master artisans, or taking part in a basket-weaving workshop!
