Avenue of plane trees
A noble avenue of plane trees that paints the town with the changing beauty of the seasons
The plane‑tree avenue, often called the “Romantic Road,” is one of Asahikawa’s signature streetscapes, with plane trees planted along the sidewalk for roughly 3 kilometers. Their mature branches form a spectacular green tunnel over the roadway that changes with the seasons. From the fresh glow of new leaves and the deep shadows of high summer to the golden rows in autumn and the spare silhouettes of winter, the view is striking no matter when you visit.
The stretch adjoining Kaguraoka Park is especially rewarding, with Western‑style buildings — restaurants, patisseries and the like — punctuating the avenue and adding to its charm. The continuous pedestrian section makes it ideal for a leisurely stroll or a brisk bike ride, and it’s perfect for a half‑day outing combining photography and café hopping. Boasting one of the largest planted avenues in Japan, this tree‑lined road is a must‑see cityscape for experiencing Asahikawa’s seasonal beauty and civic aesthetic.
