Asahikawa’s history of development began in 1891, when the area was established as a strategic northern defense base for modern Japan. As the newly pioneered city matured both economically and socially, the founder of a prominent local sake brewery constructed this lavish residence in 1933.

Today, this architectural gem stands as a vital asset preserving the culture, aesthetic sensibilities, and master craftsmanship of that era. Having narrowly escaped demolition, it has been beautifully preserved and maintained through the passionate efforts of private local citizens.

Inside, visitors can immerse themselves in the exquisite Japanese aesthetics of the early 20th century. The building features a seamless blend of traditional Sukiya-style tatami rooms crafted from the finest seasonal timbers, and elegant, Art Deco-inspired Western rooms. Every detail—from the intricate woodwork on the shoji screens to the windows framing the Japanese garden—breathes the pinnacle of pre-war Japanese design.
