Kamikawa Shrine
The guardian shrine watching over Asahikawa's pioneer history, where we pray for the blessings of Mt. Daisetsu
Kamikawa Shrine originated in 1893 as the guardian shrine of Asahikawa and the protector of the Kamikawa region's pioneers. It began by enshrining Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun Goddess) on a hill near the present-day Asahikawa Station, an area then known as "Yoshitsunedai."
As the city developed, the shrine was relocated, eventually settling in its current location in Kaguraoka in 1924. At that time, Okuninushi-no-Okami and Sukunahikona-no-Okami were also enshrined alongside the main deity. Furthermore, in 1992, the spirits of those who made significant contributions to the development of Hokkaido and the Kamikawa region—such as Michitoshi Iwamura—were enshrined in the right sanctuary.
The shrine grounds offer a breathtakingly beautiful and tranquil atmosphere throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and a pristine snowy landscape in winter. Dotted with monuments and sub-shrines related to the pioneer history, it is also a perfect spot for a cultural history stroll.
(Please note: Business hours for the awarding office, offering goshuin stamps and amulets, as well as festival schedules, vary by season. We recommend checking the latest information before your visit.)
