Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Museum
Reopened in July 2023! An Ainu cultural museum with over 100 years of history
Established in 1916 by Itakishiroma Kawamura, an Ainu chief of the Kamikawa region, with the purpose of preserving and passing down Ainu culture, this historic facility originally started as a private museum.
The second director, Kaneto Kawamura (the eighth head of the Kawamura family), was a highly skilled railway surveyor active from the Meiji to the Showa eras. Because of this background, the museum exhibits not only everyday tools used by the Ainu people but also valuable historical materials, including his surveying equipment.
Visitors can immerse themselves in Ainu culture through various hands-on activities, such as crafting and playing the traditional Ainu instrument called the "mukkuri" (mouth harp), as well as experiencing traditional cuisine, Ainu embroidery, and traditional dances (advance reservations required for activities).
