Teijirō Nakahara Memorial Asahikawa City Sculpture Museum
An Asahikawa art hub where modern‑sculpture foundations meet historic architecture
The Teijirō Nakahara Memorial Asahikawa City Sculpture Museum opened in 1994 as a specialized museum dedicated to sculpture culture, centered on the works and archival material of Teijirō Nakahara — a pioneer of modern Japanese sculpture who was born in Asahikawa. Housed in the former Asahikawa Kaikōsha, a stately Western‑style building, the museum displays twelve sculptures by Nakahara alongside works and materials by contemporaries and artists with ties to Asahikawa.
The museum’s serene spaces, where historic architectural details and sculptural forms harmonize, invite careful appreciation of the mass and surface of each work. The surrounding greenery, which changes with the seasons, and the building’s photogenic exterior are additional highlights. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts special exhibitions, lectures and guided tours, offering programs suitable for everyone from first‑time visitors to serious sculpture enthusiasts.
