This is Japan's only international ice sculpture competition, held in conjunction with the Asahikawa Winter Festival. In addition to competitors selected from across Japan—from Hokkaido to Okinawa—artists from overseas also participate. Competitors spend 38 hours (40 hours for teams) carving their artworks using 8 blocks of ice (16 blocks for teams), with each block measuring 1m x 53cm x 26cm and weighing approximately 135kg. After the competition, the beautifully illuminated ice sculptures are displayed along a 1-kilometer stretch from JR Asahikawa Station to 7-jo Dori in the Heiwa-dori Shopping Park.
