Asahikawa Winter Festival

The Asahikawa Winter Festival is one of Hokkaido’s major winter events, held annually with the banks of the Ishikari River serving as the main venue.

The festival’s biggest draw is the enormous snow sculptures built with the cooperation of the Japan Self‑Defense Forces. As single structures, some of these sculptures rank among the largest in the world, and each year they recreate castles, famous characters, and other themes on a truly majestic scale.

By night, projection mapping and illuminations transform the sculptures into a vivid, otherworldly scene.

The festival also features a giant maze, and original merchandise is available for purchase. Other highlights include a 100‑meter slide descending from a large snow sculpture, numerous citizen‑made snow sculptures of various sizes, and fireworks launched from behind the main snow monument.

A “Winter Marche” offers warm local specialties, regional dishes, and Asahikawa Winter Festival original menu items.

At the Peace Street Shopping Park, a sub‑venue, the Ice Sculpture World Competition showcases beautiful works by ice sculptors; the illuminated displays at night create an unforgettable “ice city” atmosphere.
