Tenninkyo Gorge and Hagoromo Falls
A spectacular gorge in Daisetsuzan National Park
Located on the east side of Daisetsuzan National Park, Tenninkyo is a magnificent gorge surrounded by columnar joints formed by a massive eruption approximately 30,000 years ago.
The highlight of the area is the renowned Hagoromo Falls, selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls." Boasting a drop of about 270 meters—the highest in Hokkaido—the sight of the pristine water cascading down in seven distinct tiers is truly breathtaking.
To enjoy a full view of the falls, an 80-minute trek from Tenninkyo Onsen to the Takimidai observation deck is highly recommended.
Furthermore, the beauty of the gorge is enhanced by distinctive cliff faces and unique rock formations, such as "Shichifuku-iwa" (Seven Lucky Gods Rock), which rises sharply toward the sky.
Particularly in early October, the vibrant autumn foliage of rowan and maple trees adorns the steep cliffs, creating a stunning contrast with the waterfall and rock formations.
