Higashikawa Town Community Exchange Center “Sento‑pia”
The complex comprises two buildings: the atmospheric Sento‑pia I, a renovated former Higashikawa Elementary School, and the newly built, modern Sento‑pia II. The entire facility plays a central role in promoting Higashikawa Town’s three signature cultural pillars—photography, furniture design, and Daisetsuzan (mountain) culture.
A highlight is the Oda Collection, a must‑see that represents the town’s furniture‑design heritage. The permanent display includes everyday objects and world‑class Scandinavian furniture assembled by a specialist in chairs, whose pieces captivate visitors with both their design and historical significance.
The complex also houses a library in Sento‑pia II, a community café called “Minna no Shokudo” that features dishes made from local ingredients, and a Japanese language school. Serving as a hub for local creative activities, international exchange, and casual gatherings, the facility is at the heart of Higashikawa Town’s cultural and design scene and fosters warm community interaction.
