Located on the southeastern slopes of Daisetsuzan National Park, along the upper reaches of the Chubetsu River flowing from Mount Chubetsu, Teninkyo is a scenic gorge with more than 100 years of history. Its dramatic landscape was shaped by a massive eruption of Daisetsuzan approximately 34,000 years ago. Pyroclastic flow deposits from the eruption slowly cooled and solidified, forming striking columnar joints. Over thousands of years, river erosion further carved the cliffs, creating the dynamic gorge seen today.

Among these formations, “Shichifuku-iwa” (Seven Lucky Gods Rock) is particularly distinctive, with seven pillar-like rocks rising toward the sky along the river. Together with “Namida-iwa” (Tear Rock), where water appears to flow like tears down a massive rock face, it represents one of Teninkyo’s most iconic sights. In early October, the vibrant reds and yellows of autumn foliage create a stunning contrast against the powerful rock formations, attracting many photographers each year.

This is a place where visitors can experience the grandeur of nature shaped by ancient volcanic activity and the enduring flow of the river.
