Asahikawa Heison Memorial Museum
The Origins of Asahikawa — Preserving the Legacy of Tondenhei(Hokkaido’s frontier settlers)
Asahikawa Heison Memorial Museum preserves and presents the lives of the Tondenhei(Hokkaido’s military settler corps) settlers who arrived during the Meiji era and the history of development in the Kamikawa region. Original household items, farming tools, military uniforms, photographs, and archival materials vividly bring to life the people who built the foundations of the town while confronting a harsh natural environment.
Visitors can learn systematically about Asahikawa’s origins—from the layout of the settlers’ barracks and everyday survival skills to land reclamation, flood control, and the development of agriculture. The exhibits are arranged to be accessible to both children and adults, making the museum an ideal stop for school field trips or a short historical detour during sightseeing.
