It is one of the oldest artificial planting sites of foreign tree species in Hokkaido, built in Meiji 31 (1898) to observe whether foreign trees grow safely even in the cold regions of Japan. Currently, about 30 foreign species and domestic species are added to the 18-hectare site, bringing the total to about 6,000 trees of 52 species. The Biei River flows nearby, and many small animals such as squirrels and wild birds also live. It is popular among locals as a place to explore. In addition, at the entrance of the sample forest is the Ayako Miura Memorial Literature Museum, which was also the setting for the novel “Freezing Point”, and many fans from all over the country visit.
