Established in 1898 (Meiji 31), it is one of the oldest planted forests of foreign tree species in Hokkaido. It was created to observe whether non-native trees could successfully grow in Japan's cold climate. Currently, the 18-hectare site is home to about 30 foreign species alongside domestic ones, totaling approximately 6,000 trees across 52 species.

With the Biei River flowing nearby, the forest is inhabited by many wild birds and small animals, including Ezo squirrels. It is widely loved by locals as a place for a relaxing stroll.

Furthermore, the Ayako Miura Literature Museum is located at the entrance of the forest. Because this forest itself served as the setting for the famous novel "Freezing Point" (Hyoten), the site attracts many fans from all over the country.
