Teijiro Nakahara Memorial Asahikawa City Sculpture Museum
The foundation of modern sculpture and historical architecture resonate with each other, Asahikawa's art base
The “Teijiro Nakahara Memorial Asahikawa City Sculpture Museum” was opened in 1994 (Heisei 6) as a specialized museum that introduces sculpture culture, focusing on the works and materials of Teijiro Nakahara (from Asahikawa), a pioneer of modern Japan sculpture. In the museum, which is made possible by the former Asahikawa Kaigyo Shrine, which is known for its dignified Western-style architecture, you can admire 12 sculptures by Teijiro Nakahara, as well as sculptures and materials related to contemporary artists and Asahikawa. The tranquil space created by the design of historical buildings and sculptures is attractive because you can take your time to appreciate the volume and texture of the works. The surrounding greenery, which changes its expression with the four seasons, and the photogenic exterior of the building are also highlights.
In addition to permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, lectures, and guided tours are also held, allowing visitors to enjoy a wide range of activities, from introductory sculpture to in-depth appreciation.
