Asahibashi
An iconic arched bridge symbolizing Asahikawa, where the dignity of a Hokkaido Heritage site meets the flow of the Ishikari River
Asahibashi(Asahi Bridge), which spans the Ishikari River through central Asahikawa, is a designated Hokkaido Heritage site celebrated for its robust steel arches and riveted detailing. Since its completion in 1932, the bridge has stood as a landmark watching over the city’s growth and is cherished by residents as one of Asahikawa’s defining symbols.
From the bridge you can take in the majestic flow of the Ishikari River, the surrounding streetscape, and distant mountain ranges. The bridge’s character changes with the seasons — fresh spring foliage, the clear summer sky, autumn’s golden leaves, and winter’s snowy cloak each highlight its form. At dusk and into the night, the illuminations combined with the city lights make it a popular photo spot. The bridge is ideal for a leisurely walk, and the view looking up from the riverside promenade is also highly recommended.
